What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Sabotaj and I rep the West Coast.  I’m from Los Angeles, CA (South Central L.A. to be exact.)

What is unique about you and your music?

I’m a leader and not a follower. I’m loyal and when I dedicate myself to something especially something I love it’s very real. As far as music my music is original period! It’s pure raw and uncut real Hip Hop. I have what I call a 3Dimensional wicked flow. I’m very lyrical and my style is Ancient. I am the Wizard of Rhymes! Words are powerful enough to cast spells, when I bless tracks it’s in a Magical form. I’m also known as The Magical One among many other names. Hearing the music is truly understanding. I like for the music to speak for itself. Without getting to deep throughout the years of time I’ve learned how to shallow my music down at times without jeopardizing being SABOTAJ. I’ve learned to cater to a much larger audience other than those that truly want that SABOTAJ sound. This has helped me maintain my fans but also bring new ones in. The actual tracks I love rhyming to are anything from soulful to jazzy to sounds of ancient wickedness! When I say wicked that can mean a shallow more ancient exotic sound of beauty to a hardcore hip hop head banger. My dimensions are very wide and can travel very deep. I’m extremely diverse in my style and the different types of songs I have mastered. I’m very conceptual as well. Many of my songs paint pictures and can be a whole movie of music. My new album of course displays a lot of these qualities.

What shaped your music?

Life shaped my music. Reality, fantasy, trials and tribulations of growing up, pain, joy, my environment as a kid and inspiration from others. Determination and the will to achieve and win helped shaped my music. Artist of the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. From R&B soul to the Motown era to the early days of Hip Hop. Artist like Earth Wind & Fire to Marvin Gaye to Diane Ross to Michael Jackson to Prince to Rick James & Teena Marie to name a few. Hip Hop influences are Run DMC to LL Cool J to Eric B. & Rakim to Common to N.W.A. (Ice Cube, MC Ren, Dr. DRE, Eazy E, & DJ Yella) Ice Cube is one of the best ever to me. Nas, Snoop Dogg and Eminem to name a few more.

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to lots a music. I’m a musical guy. Depending on my mood and what I’m looking for. Of course I listen to tons of Hip Hop from Tribe Called Quest to EPMD to Mobb Deep to Nas to 50 Cent to Kanye West to The Game to name a few. I listen to a lot of music from the 80’s era from Joan Jett & The Blackhearts “I Love Rock n Roll” to songs by The Police, Toto, Queen, & Blondie to name a few. R&B Soul from Al Green to Marvin Gaye to Curtis Mayfield & The Stylistics to name a few. I listen to Jazz from John Klemmer to Herb Albert to Paul Hardcastle “Lost Summer” love it!!! The whole Jazzmasters vibe is mentally soothing when I need to be in a free minded relaxing state.

Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?

Black Thought from the Roots, The Roots as a Hip Hop band period. The Lox (Jadakiss, Styles P & Sheek Louch). Royce da 5’9″ and The Game are definitely underrated and undervalued, those two right there might be at the top of my list there’s many. KRS One is forgotten about in this new age of music and that’s a crying shame! That’s a top 10 MC ever!

How do you prepare for your performances?

I go over my songs until I’m sure I know the words 1st and foremost! I practice how I want to move and understand my breath control in the process. I need to have an idea of what I want to say to the crowd in-between songs on stage. This can be played by ear as well do to different crowds and the vibe of the event. If something fails or goes wrong on stage never stop keep the performance going! Meditate and pray ask God to bless you and protect you. Stay calm and poised to keep the nerves down leading up to 1hr or less to hit the stage. Drinks lots of water.

What ignites your (song) writing flow?

Depends, could be anger, could be overwhelmed with joy, could be touched by an event that moved me enough where the words just spilled out. It could be my excitement about a deep concept that’s so challenging that I want to prove to me I can kill it! Could be a batch of tracks I received and 1 track smacks me so hard that I have the whole song in my head instantly it’s just a race to write the words before I lose them. I hate when that happens.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are

passionate about?

I enjoy spending time with my love ones. My daughters, my close friends my family. I enjoy dope lounge’s, bars etc. Somewhere I can catch a good drink and feel the vibes of a great atmosphere. I’m not too big on clubs anymore just simply grown out of that faze. I enjoy Laker games, watch a lot of Football when the season is in, Raiders on mine! I enjoy the vibe of small getaways with my beautiful woman.

Success to you is…

Success to me is my music finally being heard and accepted by the world. Being able to sit among the greats and understanding I’m accepted and worthy by my peers & Hip Hop fans of that position. I’ve paid an extreme amount of dues been doing music more than 1/2 my life and stayed dedicated and perfected my craft. I’m deserving of great success! I’ve done it right and stayed true to me and those around me. Success is peace of mind and knowing I can pay my bills and comfortably enjoy the pleasure of life (great food, vacation trips, & owning a beautiful home). Success is being able to have my kids set up right so they won’t have to go through what I had to go through. God bless!
