What is your name and what city do you rep?
So I go by the Artist Name Mikey Shyne.. You’re gonna want to continue to read this article. I’m from Queens, NYC and there’s a small backstory behind the name, it’s not something that was just pulled out of a hat to put on a front like a few out there do. In January 2015, I began to take this seriously. Not just as my outlet anymore, but I at least took it serious enough to grant myself the “see what happens” opportunity. As I was really figuring out the blueprint, I was recording demos upon demos and one of the dudes that was with the initial movement always said that my tracks were hot and had ‘that sparkle’ and ‘that shine’. When I’d work on something new, he’d say ‘need that shine, need that shine’. I happened to be coming out of a dark place at that point in time and the word resonated with me metaphorically, because I was ready to shine some light on my life story. Mike Shine was too generic and the initial plan was to stay with strictly Hip Hop music. So adding the Y’s was just more appealing. I wanted to be easily found online since the industry is so over-saturated. After the name stuck, I realized there may be the potential for being “Out-Shyned” when I remembered the rapper, Shyne. I used to listen to Shyne the rapper back in the early 2000’s who’s had some influence on my writing skills. But since he fell off and has been out of the spotlight in recent years I didn’t think there would be too much contradiction.
What is unique about you and your music?
What’s so unique about me is my versatility in how I crossover from genre-to-genre. My first studio release ‘Set Me Free’ was a timeless Pop track. Then I dropped some Rap-Sing Hip Hop tracks, easy listening, acoustic, a country-like love song, some more Hip-Hop, then I got heavy into the EDM thing and blew up in that scene, spending 8 weeks at #1 on the Int’l EDM Charts and now I have a Hip Hop track dropping soon with the truly legendary pioneer of Hip Hop, Kurtis Blow. So I’m not afraid to take on any project, I love the challenge that having to be creative brings. It keeps me busy and away from my demons. My debut studio album, which I’m working on now is going to being insane. Something for everyone is going to be on there and every track is going to be as real and raw as possible!
What shaped your music?
90’s Pop and Alternative Rock, the sounds of my childhood are my main influences but I got deep into Hip Hop in my teens.
What type of music do you listen to?
Mostly Hip Hop, Old school Soul music, of course Pop- Top 40 and some good house music are always on my playlists. But I love to find underground Indie artists some I’m always checking out the blogs and Youtube for some new good music as inspiration and keep up with the trends.
Who, to you, is the most undervalued music artist?
As of late, ‘Major’ an R&B singer who just arrived on the professional scene.
How do you prepare for your performances?
Performing comes so natural to me so once I’m on stage I am a crowd-killer. But before hand, I like to chill out and get in my zone with my headphones on, away from the fans and club-goers and also warm up my vocals somewhere private because some of the sounds I make and exercises I use are laughably out there.
What ignites your (song) writing flow?
I love to stay in tune with myself so I write every single day. Good or bad, I’m always expressing myself lyrically so songwriting, when I’m matched up with the right beat or instrumental is just second nature. I am also very observant and love to take in the world around me, so my ability to tell relate able stories is excellent.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
To be honest, I’ve been getting a lot of heat from my girlfriend lately because I’m either working to earn a living or in the lab working on new projects. I love her and my daughter to death, its really a feeling I can’t explain so I try my best to handle home life and be there for them. But my drive and determination to constantly level up in the music world kind of keeps me away from other things from time to time. They say a true artist is never satisfied… It’s like chasing the next high, but I do make time to take care of my home, be there on an emotional level for my 2 girls and ensure that my future is secure.
Success to you is…
Being recognized for my talents, worth and hard work. On a personal level, my true feeling of success will come when I can say F*** You to anyone and everyone that ever laughed or doubted me. 95% of friends, family and acquaintances never took me pursuing this seriously. Having family members try to stay in your way and rip you from your biggest passion is a really bitter feeling, but they are finally coming around and realizing that my talent isn’t just a pipe-dream. Being #1 on the International Dance Charts for 2 Consecutive months and having a #1 and a #3 release on iTunes isn’t make believe.
Any upcoming projects?
Currently working on my Debut Studio Album, which is going to be absolutely insane! Going to have a bunch of celebrity features on there, top producers and my story is going to be told in the most musically intriguing manner. I have no doubts that it will do well. Also, I’m releasing “Find A Way” a single featuring the Pioneer & Legend himself, Kurtis Blow. The records also being produced by Grammy Nominee DJ Tomekk who is just the most talented, amazing human being and realest dude out there.
